Welcome to Syrian Orthodox Christian Centre About Us The Syrian Orthodox Christian Centre (SOCC) is a beautifully completed building with all modern facilities. The centre was formally inaugurated on February 10th 2015 by His Holiness Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East. The St. George’s Chapel also was consecrated on the same day. Prior to that, house warming of the centre was done on 3rd January 2015. The occasion was the silver jubilee of the episcopal ordination of His Grace Thomas Mor Themotheos, Metropolitan of the Kottayam Diocese.
History The land measuring 2.75 Acres at Eranjal, Kanjikuzhy, was bought by the Syrian Orthodox Christian Association (SOCA) in 1979. The association was registered under the Travancore – Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act of 1955. The purchase of the land was through efforts of MR. K. P. John Kottapparambil, Chev. V. J. Chandy Viruthipadavil and Adv. P. C. Abraham Thekkethattil. Th late catholicose of blessed memory, His Beatitude Baselios Poulose II was the President of the Association. His Beatitude was the Metropolitan of the Kottayam Diocese. The first of Vice Presidents were K.P. Niman Kottaparampil, Chev. V. J. Chandy and Rev. Fr. V.M Geevarghese Kallooparambil. Advo. P. C. Abraham was the Secretary of the Association till his demise in 2012. All these people have done great service to the Jacobite Community through their great efforts in procuring the land. They enlisted support of forty members including two churches St. Mary’s Church Manarcadu and St. George’s Church Kallumkathara, at that time when the land was purchased. The initial meeting of the Association was presided over by Advo. K.P Niman Kottaparambil, the vice president. The meetings were held at the house of Chev. V. J. Chandy at Muttambalam. The Association could not do any construction for thirty years due to several obstacles. During the tenure of His Grace Geevarghese Mar Gregorios, Metropolitan of Kottayam, several important meetings of the Association were held and decisions were taken for the promotion of the land. The actualization the decision happened in the line of those decisions, though after 30 years. In 1998 December H. G. Thomas Mor Themotheos took charge of the Kottayam Diocese as Assistant Metropolitan. In 1999 February when H. G. Geevarghese Mor Gregorios, Metropolitan of Kottayam passed away, H. G. Thomas Mor Themotheos took full charge of the Diocese and efforts were continued to do some construction work at the Eranjal site. In 2002 a total plan sanction of the Chief Town Planner of the Kerala was obtained with many conditions. It was instructed in the approval that all construction works should be done with municipal approval only. In 2009 the plan of the present completed building was submitted to the Kottayam Minicipality. But it was rejected citing certain decisions of the Government of Kerala, for the use of the land in that area. In December of that same year a writ petition was filed at the High Court of Kerala and a landmark verdict came on the 16th. Through that verdict, the Municipality of Kottayam was directed to approve the plan within five weeks. Thus the way was cleared for construction work at Eranjal. On 15th March 2010, the foundation stone of the building was laid. Through the support of members of the Kottayam Diocese and the support extended by the churches of the North American Malankara Arch Diocese, the building project was completed towards the end of 2014 and it was consecrated on 3rd January 2015. During the historic visit of H. H. Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, in February 2015 the formal Inauguration of the center took place. The first persons who used the facilities of the center turned out to be His Holiness and his entourage. The completion of the center was made possible through the unstinting efforts of H. G Thomas Mor Themotheos. The tireless efforts of Mr. John Paul Kottaparambil, Mr. P. M. Jacob Pazhayakalam and Mr. Joshy Chandy Elanjiveettil are highly appreciable. V. Rev. Kuriakose Cor Episcopa Kizhakedathu and V. Rev. Kuriakose Cor Episcopa Manalelchira as Secretaries of Kottayam Diocese, have put in great efforts for the completion of the building. The support received from the churches of Kottayam Diocese and that of the faithful and the well wishers need mentioning.
